The Nephrology Department

The Nephrology Department was first founded in 1966 by Professor Xu Qinjun, an expert in nephrology, under the proposal of Professor Xie Tong, a well-known expert in urology. It was the first unit of Shanghai to provide peritoneal dialysis (PD) for renal patients (started from 1973). It offers hemodialysis (HD) service from 1974 and has been one of the biggest dialysis units of Shanghai. With the unremitting efforts of three directors of the department including Xu Qinjun, Yao Jian and Yuan Weijie, its blood purification scope and level maintain at the top list of Shanghai.

With 46 open beds, it has an annual outpatient visit over 50,000 and more than 1,600 cases discharged from the hospital per year. At present, the Nephrology Department has become the Blood Purification Treatment Center for Severe Diseases of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Backbone Unit of Shanghai Hemodialysis Quality Control Center, Vice Chairman Unit of Chinese Society of Blood Purification Administration, Standing Committee Member of Chinese Nephrologist Association and Committee Member of Chinese Society of Nephrology and National Clinical Pharmacology Base. Due to the academic position and technical advantage in PD, the Nephrology Department has successfully held national continuing medical education conference on PD annually, which attracts nearly 100 doctors and nurses in PD each year. In 2011, it became one of the first 31 peritoneal dialysis training and demonstration centers approval by the Ministry of Health.

In recent years, the Nephrology Department was subsidized by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, sub-project of National Key Scientific Research Plan Project, sub-project of Public Welfare Project in "12th Five-Year Plan" of the Ministry of Health, Nutrition Fund of International Society of Nephrology and Shanghai Natural Science Fund and Shanghai Medical Science and Technology Development Fund. It won 12 awards including Award for Science and Technology Achievement and Medical Achievement Award at municipal, provincial and ministerial level. In recent four years, it published more than 130 papers in the international and chinese journals, while compiled three monographs including "Peritoneal Dialysis Therapy", "Treatment of Kidney Diseases by Combination of Drugs" as chief editor and participated in compiling 19 works for study and reference of clinical specialists such as Blood Purification and Chinese Nephrology. It took part in the preparation and popularization of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) on HD and PD organized by the Ministry of Health. The Nephrology Department now has six professors/chief physicians, four associate chief physicians, one doctoral supervisor and one master's supervisor, 90% of which has doctor's or master's degree. The Administrative Director of the Department is Yuan Weijie and the Executive Director is(Southern Branch) Yu Qing.
