Clinical Feature
The Nephrology Department has 89 sets of various blood purification machines including four continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) machines, ten hemofiltration machines and three full-automatic peritoneal dialysis machines. It is able to carry out various blood purification related treatments including hemodialysis, hemofiltration, plasma exchange and adsorption. The existing patients undergoing maintenance haemodialysis exceed 450 cases. The total hemodialysis and hemofiltration have surpassed 66,000 case-time/year and CRRT is nearly 1,200 case-time/year. The average survival rate of the patients receiving hemodialysis in 10 years reaches to 41% and the maximum survival time is about 34 years, one of the longest survival in Shanghai. At present, there are more than 200 patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis, which grows over 50 cases per year.
The Nephrology Department has rich clinical experience in treatment of severe kidney disease and forms its own features. In close cooperation with many relevant departments like Department of Liver and Kidney Transplantation, ICU and Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, it offers many blood purification modalities for severely ill patients (such as ARDS, septicopyemia, hepatic failure, drug poisoning and necrotizing pancreatitis), which provide chance for further treatment and improving the survival of critical patients. From the first domestic kidney transplantation in 1976, the Nephrology Department has actively participated in follow-up and treatment of complications of the transplanted kidney, which made the quantity and quality of kidney transplantation in Shanghai General Hospital to reach the top level of Shanghai and China. It has formed the clinical features of treatment of complications from kidney transplantation.
