The Respiratory Department

The Respiratory Department is a key clinical specialty of the hospital. As early as 1940s, we established the ward of the Respiratory Department and RICU early in Shanghai, which has rescued hundreds of severe patients. In the 1980s, we created the fiberoptic bronchoscopy in nasotracheal intubation and applied the fiber bronchoscope in severe disease. We are the first to report the nasotracheal intubation guided by fiber bronchoscope and application of long term indwelling nasotracheal intubation in treating acute respiratory failure and application of the fiber bronchoscope in severe lung disease. In the 1990s, we treated COPD with respiratory failure by sequential invasive to noninvasive mechanical ventilation. We are involved in compiling the Asthma Prevention Guidance, Cough Diagnosis and Treatment Guidance and Guidance for Diagnosis and Treatment of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. With regard to the basic research and new treatment method of asthma pathogenesis, we completed some projects such as simple asthma control test (ACT), which has reached the international and domestic leading level in China. We are the first department of China that applies aspergillus antigen (GM test) detection technology in early diagnosis of invasive aspergillosis. Recently, this technology has been widely applied in China, which plays an active role in the early diagnosis of the immunity impaired patient infectious with aspergillus. We also drafted the diagnosis and treatment principles of the invasive pulmonary aspergillosis. The doctors, nurses and laboratory researchers of the department are professsional and skillful. Besides, there is also an excellent technical team, which can meet the demand of the clinical work and sustainable development of the Respiratory Department. There are 58 doctors and nurses including 27 physicians, six persons with senior professional title, seven persons with associate senior professional title and fourteen attending doctors in the department. The number of persons with senior, intermediate and primary professional title accounts for 51.9%, 40.7% and 7.4%, respectively. Education background: Nine doctors and six masters. The Department has two doctoral supervisors. The academic leader and Administrative Director of the Respiratory Department is Li Qiang and Deputy Director (Southern Branch) Ben Suqin.
