Discipline Characteristics

  The Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics has Outpatient Operating Room, Vaginoscopy Room, Vaginal Cell Examination Room, Ultrasonic Examination Room, Gynecology and Obstetrics Research Room and Gynecology and Obstetrics Institute of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. It is able to treat gynecologic tumor, gestational diabetes, infertility, climacteric syndrome, genital system infection and family planning, provide more than 200,000 outpatients and 9,000 inpatients with high quality medical service each year and receive a large number of patients at home and abroad and severe patients as allocated from large general hospitals. It performs over 8300 operations per year, including about 2200 minimally invasive operations. The figure ranks top among all general hospitals in Shanghai for three consecutive years and all surgical departments of the hospital for five consecutive years.

  The exploration of clinical theory and technical innovation of the department always maintain at the leading position. In 1951, Professor Lin Yuanying combined the advantages of Okabayashi and Meigs operation and took the lead in performing the extensive radical operation for cervical cancer and pelvic lymph node dissection, which up to now has cured more than 10,000 patients and increased the survival rate for four years after operation to 95%, a world advanced level. It won National Science Conference Award, National Medicine and Health Science Conference Award and Shanghai Major Medical Achievement Award. In the mid-1960s, it chaired the national key clinical task as one of the major units, i.e. research and development of Cyclo-Provera, which won Shanghai Key Scientific and Technological Achievement Award. In the 1970s and 1980s, it undertook the task of the Ministry of Health, i.e. the preparation and clinical application of β-HCG ria kit, the task of Shanghai Science and Technology Committee, i.e. clinical application of radioimmunoassay of human placental lactogen in obstetrics and the task of National Health and Family Planning Commission, i.e. clinical application of pregnancy test card. They won the Grade-II Class-A Achievement Award of the Ministry of Health, Third Prize for Shanghai Scientific and Technological Achievement and Second Prize for Scientific and Technological Advancement of National Health and Family Planning Commission. The clinical and basic research achievements on early diagnosis and judgment after recovery of ovarian cancer in recent decade won the Third Chinese Medical Prize, First and Second and Prize for Shanghai Medical Science and Technology Advancement.
