Characteristic Specialty of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Municipal Hospital

    The Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine, founded in 1956, was one of the first clinical departments of the Hospital after the founding of the nation. Many domestic well-known TCM specialists such as Professor Zhang Jingren came forth one after another. At the initial stage, there were only the Division of Chinese Internal Medicine and Division of Acupuncture and Moxibustion. The Division of TCM Surgery was founded in 1979. The Division of TCM Gynecology was founded in 1980. The Research Office of TCM Qi-Blood Theory was founded in 1981. The previous directors of the Department include Xia Libin (with grade-I and class-3 health technology), Ye Langqing, Zhang Jingren, Yan Peizhen, Yang Hutian, Zhang Cunjun and Wang Songpo. There are grade 2 disciplines such as Division of Chinese Internal Medicine, Division of TCM Surgery, Division of TCM Gynecology, TCM Teaching and Research Room, TCM Spleen and Stomach Disease Lab. It is a demonstrative Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine among Shanghai general hospitals and TCM work demonstration unit of national general hospitals. The specialty of spleen and stomach disease is a drug clinical trial experiment base of TCM gastroenterology approved by State Food and Drug Administration.
    At present, the Department has built "Veteran TCM Expert Zhang Jingren Inheritance Studio", "Veteran TCM Expert Cai Xiaosun Inheritance Studio" of State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, "Zhang's Medicine School Inheritance Research Base" and "Cai's Gynecology School Inheritance Research Base" of Shanghai Municipal Health Bureau. The specialty of spleen and stomach disease is the coordinator of Shanghai Medical Cooperation Center for TCM (Combination of Chinese Traditional and Western Medicine) Chronic Gastritis and TCM Gastropathy Diagnosis and Treatment Center of Shanghai Jiao Tong University and also the "Characteristic TCM Specialty of Municipal Hospital" and "TCM Clinical Superior Specialty". The Department has won more than 10 awards including the Third Prize for National Science and Technology Advancement, Class-A Achievement Award of State   

    Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine and other scientific research award at ministerial and bureau level. It has the new drug clinical trial experiment base of TCM gastroenterology approved by State Food and Drug Administration. The Department has an annual outpatient visit over 170,000 and inpatients more than 1,000. With strong technical force, the Department has one TCM master and two domestic well-known veteran TCM doctors. Now it has 23 medical staff (nine chief physicians, six associate chief physicians) including three master's supervisors, three doctors and four masters. The Director and Deputy Director of the Department are Wang Songpo and Wei Qianghua, respectively.
