Clinical Feature

The Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism was the first to conduct clinical study on sulfonylureas drugs for diabetes and research on the testing method of glycosylated hemoglobin and glycosylated plasma protein in China. It took the lead in carrying out the basic and clinical research on islet transplantation and developing ICA testing method. It also started the GADA inspection very early. 

The Department took the lead in conducting the clinical research on human fetal islet transplantation to treat Type 1 diabetes. It designed the method of semi-automatic adult islet separation and purification and applied it in clinical treatment early in China. In addition, it conducted the first adult islet cells transplantation and the first adult islet cells-kidney transplantation of Asia. 

In recent years, the department made new progress in the clinical diagnosis and treatment technology and developed new clinical technologies such as joint detection of islet cells, intensive insulin therapy with insulin pump, continuous glucose monitoring, fine needle aspiration for thyroid nodule and osteoporosis information management system. 

The Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism regularly conducts teaching activity for the patients with diabetes, provides publicity and education at the outpatient, for the inpatients and patients in the community at regular intervals and holds several large free diagnosis activities. The doctors, nurses and nutritionists participate in the activities. They make systematic explanation on the general knowledge about diabetes, self monitoring of diagnosis and treatment and self management so that the they will have a correct and in-depth understanding of diabetes, which facilitates the control of blood glucose and the prevention and treatment of complications of diabetes. It also takes charge of the standardized cultivation of the resident doctors as a standardized specialty base for training resident doctors. From 2011 on, our hospital started to perform the Standardized Cultivation Standard for Clinical Resident Doctors of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine.
