The prestigious Shanghai General Hospital (previously known as Shanghai First People`s Hospital), founded in 1864, is among the oldest and biggest hospitals in China. Our hospital was a former teaching hospital of Fudan University Medical Center, and currently an affiliated hospital of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Similarly, the department of neurology, established in 1958, was among the first specialty hospital in the country devoted entirely to the study and treatment of nervous system disorders. Our department provides comprehensive consultative services, diagnostic testing and treatment for a broad spectrum of neurological conditions, including diseases of the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves and muscles.

The Department of Neurology consists of 32 physicians and staffs, many of whom have gained national and international recognition for their clinical and research achievements. We are united by a common goal: finding new treatments and cures the patients with neurological disorders. Our mission is to be the preeminent academic neurology department in China by providing outstanding clinical care while rapidly discovering new treatments to reduce and eliminate the devastating impact of neurological disorders; training the best neurologists and scientists of the future, and improving the health and well-being of the diverse communities we serve.

The Department of Neurology has two parts which were located in No. 100, Haining Road, Hongkou District (also called Northen Branch) and No. 650, New Songjiang Road, Songjiang District, Shanghai (also called Southern Branch). The Neurology Department has about 3000 annual inpatient admissions and 200,000 outpatient visits. The Neurology Department currently has one doctoral supervisor and two master's supervisors. The Director of the Department of Neurology in Shanghai General Hospital is Professor Yuncheng Wu, MD. PhD.

The Department of Neurology has the following divisions including:

(1). The Stroke Center: Our stroke team can treat all acute stroke patients with venous or artery thrombolysis, stent implantation and artery embolectomy. The stroke center has both stroke unit and stroke clinic which are available for all stroke patients including TIA, minor stroke, diabetic or AF-related stroke, leukoencephalopathy, cerebral small vessel disease, cerebral hemorrhage, SAH, vascular dementia and post-stroke depression. Our stroke team is 24 -hour available for regular treatment of acute stroke patients with venous or intra-arterial thrombolysis, stent implantation and artery embolectomy. Our stroke center also established Stroke Screening Clinic, Stroke Follow-up Visit Clinic, Cerebrovascular Stenosis and Neurointervention Clinic. Our team was also supported by many fundings including the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and has published many scientific papers on top journals such as Arch Neurol and Stroke. We host the academic meeting such as Gongji (the first Chinese name of Shanghai General Hospital) Stroke Forum. Our stroke center was accredited by the Chinese Stroke Association and Chinese Stroke Alliance, and it has reached a domestic leading level in both venous or intra-arterial thrombolysis and interventional treatment for acute stroke, and we are also focusing on the diagnosis and treatment for the young-onset stroke, hereditary stroke and cryptogenic stroke.

(2). The Center for Neurodegenerative Disease and Movement Disorders. We are one of the most famous centers for Parkinson`s Disease and Movement Disorders in China. We can treat all movement disorders including Parkinson's disease and Parkinsonism Syndrome, Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS), Wilson's disease, essential tremor, dystonia, chorea, ataxia, PKD, tics disorder and ADHD. And we can treat Alzheimer`s disease, vascular dementia and other memory disorders. The center has six outpatient clinics (Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders Clinic, Restless Legs Syndrome and Sleep Disorder Clinic, Dystonia and Botulinum Toxin Treatment Clinic, Wilson`s disease and Hereditary Disorders Clinic, Alzheimer's disease and Memory Disorders Clinic, Vascular Dementia and Stroke Clinic). We are focusing on the long term treatment and care for the patients to utmostly improve their quality of life. The team was supported by many grants including the National Natural Science Foundation of China(NSFC), and had published many papers on top neuroscience journals such as Arch Neurol, J Neurchem, Neurobiol Aging, J Neurol Sci, etc. In particular, the Center is very famous on the diagnosis and treatment for Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer disease, Restless Legs Syndrome, Dystonia and Wilson's disease both at home and abroad. We will host the academic meeting and national-level continuing education training session on Neurodegenerative Disease and Movement Disorders each year.

The Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders Clinic is the earliest movement clinic in China, we hold the health education activity for treating, nursing and daily caring with the patients regularly.

(3). The Division of Sleep Disorders. It has rich clinical experience on the diagnosis and treatment of the all sleep disorders which caused by RLS, rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorders, Parkinson's disease, senile dementia, cerebrovascular disease, epilepsy, depressive disorder or anxiety. It has reached a domestic leading level in the clinical diagnosis and treatment of RLS. The team was supported by many grants including NSFC, West China Association Fund and Medical-Engineering Fund of Shanghai Municipal Health Bureau and Shanghai Jiao Tong University and has published many papers on the professional journals at home and abroad such as Neurobiol Aging, J Neurol Sci and Chinese Journal of Neurology. It hosts national level continuing education training session on sleep disorders each year.

(4). The Division of Epilepsy and Paroxysmal disease: We can diagnose all seizures and epilepsy, headache and dizziness. It has specialized outpatient for epilepsy and was supported by many fundings including NSFC and has published academic papers on such international journals.

(5). The Division of Neuro-immune and Demyelinating Diseases: We can treat all neuromyelitis, mutiple sclerosis, Guillain-Barre Syndrome, MG, peripheral neuropathy and encephalitis.

(6). The Rare Neurological Disease MDT Clinic. Based on the above divisions, we established a Rare Neurological Disease MDT clinic, providing medical service for the clinical diagnosis and treatment of difficult and rare diseases of nervous system.

Based on the individualized principle, our Department will provide the diagnosis and treatment for all the patients with nervous system diseases including stroke, Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders, Alzheimer disease and other memory disorders, restless leg syndrome and other sleep disorders, neuralgia, epilepsy, headache, dizziness or vertigo, peripheral nerve and muscle diseases.
