The Department of Orthopaedics

As one of our key characteristic disciplines, the Department of Orthopaedics of Shanghai General Hospital has a long history and excellent cultural inheritance. It was founded by Professor Ren Tinggui who was also the founder of the Department of Surgery in early years after liberation. It is one of the first domestic Orthopedics. It took the lead in performing the sacroiliac joint and hip joint tuberculosis removal in China. In 1961, Director Liu Guangjie built the first artificial limb research lab of the country to conduct medical recovery study on disabled limb. In the same year, the Medical Center for Correcting Infantile Paralysis was founded and plenty of operations on such aspect were performed, which won many national and municipal awards. Through more than sixty years of hard work of several generations of orthopedists, the Department grows into a key discipline with powerful technical force, distinctive specialty features. By integrating medical, teaching and scientific research, it has reached to a domestic leading and international advanced level.

Under the leadership of Professor Cai Zhengdong, an academic leader, the department has made great progress. Nowadays, the Department is accredited to grant master and doctor's degree. It is also the moving station of postdoctors of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Standardized Training Base for Resident Doctor and Orthopedist of the Ministry of Health and the largest bone and soft tissue tumor diagnosis and treatment center in Eastern China. There is Standing Committee Member of Orthopaedics Branch of Chinese Medical Doctor Association, Standing Committee Member of Specialized Sarcoma Committee of Chinese Anti-Cancer Association, Leader of National Pelvic Ring Oncology Group, Vice Chairman of Orthopaedics Branch of Shanghai Medical Association, Member of Shanghai Orthopaedics Quality Control Panel, Young Member of National Sports Medicine, Member of National Specialized Shoulder Joint Association, Member of Chinese Trauma Association, Deputy Chief of Spine Trauma Group of Orthopaedics Branch of Chinese Medical Association and Member of Minimally Invasive Group.

Now it has four characteristic subspecialties including bone tumor surgery, joint surgery, spine surgery and trauma surgery. They all have had distinctive features and have reached a domestic leading level in academic circle. It has 145 beds and the annual operation exceeds 4000 cases, of which the grade 3 and 4 surgeries surpass 70%. The yearly outpatient and emergency visits are more than 120000 person-time.

The Department of Orthopaedics has 32 physicians in total including two Doctoral Supervisors, six Master's Supervisors, seven Chief Physicians and seven Associate Chief Physicians. More than 95% masters and over 50% physicians studied overseas famous universities. It has won more than 20 talent plans at different level and has 30 person-time undertaking national and Shanghai municipal academic committee member. As a key discipline of the affiliated hospital of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, it has cultivated more than 70 masters, doctors and postdoctors. Many of them later study abroad and became backbones of the department.

The Department attaches great importance to academic exchange and communication. It has established long-term and steady cooperative relationship with several renowned medical institutes such as MD Anderson Cancer Center which ranks first worldwide of the industry and Massachusetts General Hospital. It held various international and domestic conferences as well as national level conferences, which enjoys high reputation at home and abroad. Shanghai Research Institute of Bone Tumor was founded as approved by the Ministry of Health. It is the only specialized bone tumor research institute in Eastern China. In recent years, the department was granted ten funds at national, provincial and ministerial level. In addition, it won more than ten awards including the First Prize for Chinese Medical Science and Technology, First Prize for Shanghai Medical Science and Technology, and Second Prize for Shanghai Science and Technology Advancement. In recent five years, it published more than 200 papers including nearly 100 articles published on JBJS, Spine, Cancer and other high level foreign language periodical, and compiled and translated 12 books as the chief editor and the translator.
