On August 6th, Shen Chang, a hematologist and member of Shanghai General Hospital’s 11th cohort of professionals participating in the group-based medical aid program for Tibet, returned safely to Shanghai after successfully completing his one-year assignment. Fan Xiaohong, Secretary of the Hospital Party Committee; Xia Wei, Director of the Organization Department; and staff members from the department were at the airport to welcome him home.

In July 2025, Dr. Shen traveled to the Department of Hematology at Shigatse People’s Hospital to provide medical aid. Over the past year, he focused on common hematological conditions affecting people living at high altitudes, particularly high-altitude polycythemia and nutritional anemia. He actively promoted advanced techniques, including therapeutic red blood cell apheresis, and worked to improve the standardization and quality of clinical diagnosis and treatment.
During his work in Shigatse, Dr. Shen placed equal emphasis on transferring medical expertise and building sustainable local capacity. Through bedside teaching rounds, professional training sessions, and discussions of complex cases, he provided dedicated mentorship to local physicians and helped strengthen the expertise of the local medical team.
He also successfully secured approval for a Natural Science Foundation of Tibet Autonomous Region under the group-based medical aid to Tibet project, focusing on clinical research into high-altitude hematological disorders. In addition, he actively contributed to organizing the Hematology Subforum of the 10th Tibet Autonomous Region Medical Everest Forum, helping create a platform for academic exchange among hematology specialists across the region and supporting broader improvements in hematological care in Shigatse.
For many years, medical professionals from Shanghai General Hospital participating in medical aid programs in Tibet have remained committed to frontline clinical work despite challenging conditions. Through their medical expertise, dedication, and pragmatic approach, they have fulfilled their support missions and put into practice the professional values of respecting life, healing the sick, selfless service, and boundless compassion. Their contributions reflect the professionalism, sense of responsibility, and commitment to public service that define the staff of Shanghai General Hospital.
