Glorious Gongji | Professor ZOU Haidong and Professor HAN Bangmin were awarded the honorary title of “Shanghai Craftsman” in 2025

On December 24th, the list of “Shanghai Craftsmen” for 2025 was announced. Professor ZOU Haidong and HAN Bangmin, both who are currently serving as the vice president of Shanghai General Hospital were awarded the title of "Shanghai Craftsmen".

ZOU Haidong

Chief physician, Professor, Doctoral supervisor in Ophthalmology Department at Shanghai General Hospital

He currently serves as the vice president of Shanghai General Hospital, deputy director of the Ophthalmology Center, president of the Shanghai Eye Disease Prevention and Treatment Center/Shanghai Ophthalmic Hospital, director of the Shanghai Eye Disease Precision Diagnosis and Treatment Engineering Technology Center, director of the Shanghai Anti-Blindness Office, and head of key public health disciplines in Shanghai. He also holds positions as an A-level councilor of the International Anti-Blindness Association, deputy head of the All-China Anti-Blindness Technical Guidance Group, vice chairman of the Shanghai Ophthalmological Society, current chairman of the Shanghai Optometry Society, and current chairman of the Ophthalmology Branch of the Shanghai Preventive Medicine Association. He has been selected as a member of the National Hundred, Thousand, and Ten Thousand Talent Program, a leading talent in Shanghai, an outstanding academic leader in Shanghai, one of the top 0.2% optometry scholars globally, and a recipient of special allowance from the State Council.

Having practiced medicine for over 20 years, he has treated nearly 160,000 patients with complicated eye diseases and performed over 40,000 surgeries, with patients ranging in age from 8 months to 104 years old. He has continuously pushed the boundaries of technology, reducing surgical incisions to an ultra-micro 1.4mm, earning him the title of "dancer on the tip of the scalpel". ‌

Facing the severe challenge of a 30-year continuous increase in children's myopia rate, he led his team to establish a research cohort of one million people, pioneering early detection and prediction technology for myopia internationally. He also independently developed AI technology, combining innovative drugs and optical means to precisely intervene in the occurrence and development of myopia. So far, 15.68 million myopia screenings have been completed, with 3.68 million early warnings issued and 1.56 million early diagnoses and treatments implemented. He has led the development of two national health industry standards in the field of myopia prevention and control, covering over 100 million children nationwide. His "Shanghai Model" has been promoted globally by the World Health Organization. ‌

Based on the above achievements, Zou Haidong has published a total of 431 papers and edited/co-edited 9 monographs. He has also received 10 scientific and technological awards, including the National and Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Awards.

HAN Bangmin

Chief physician, Professor, Doctoral supervisor in the Department of Urology at Shanghai General Hospital

He currently serves as the vice president of Shanghai General Hospital, director of the Urology Clinical Medicine Center, and director of the Shanghai Top Priority Urology Research Center. He has been selected for the Shanghai Eastern Excellence Talent Project Talent Plan and has been awarded honorary titles such as the Top Ten Outstanding Young Urologists Award by the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, the Shanghai Good Doctor Nomination Award, the Shanghai Medical Association's Person of the Year Award, and the Excellent Style of Famous Doctors in China.

For over two decades practising in medicine, he has steadfastly upheld his original aspiration of using his benevolence to benefit society, deeply delving into the field of prostate disease diagnosis and treatment. He has achieved a series of breakthroughs in technological innovation, clinical research, and science popularization. As one of the earliest experts in China to explore and promote thulium laser enucleation of the prostate, he has driven the innovation of prostate hyperplasia surgery, transitioning from traditional models to minimally invasive and precise approaches. This surgical technique has become a globally mainstream treatment method and has been included in authoritative medical works and international clinical guidelines. He performed the first 3D laparoscopic radical prostatectomy in East China and the first Xi robotic radical prostatectomy in Shanghai. Through a "three-in-one" diagnostic and treatment system that encompasses preoperative imaging and functional assessments, intraoperative precise individualized anatomy, and postoperative targeted rehabilitation, he accurately preserves urinary control function after prostate cancer surgery. He pioneered the use of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound for the treatment of postoperative urinary incontinence and led the development of two expert consensuses to promote industry standardization.

The AI model for prostate cancer early warning and diagnosis, driven by multi-source heterogeneous data that he developed, accelerates the implementation of the new "no-needle biopsy" diagnosis mode, enabling early diagnosis and precise evaluation of prostate cancer, and promoting the transformation of prostate cancer treatment from total glandular resection to organ-preserving precision therapy. In addition to clinical and scientific research work, he is also actively involved in the dissemination of the concept of comprehensive health management. He innovatively established a multi-dimensional science popularization and dissemination matrix, and the book "Prostate Diseases" he edited has been republished three times.

Based on the above achievements, Han Bangmin has successively won the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, the first prize of the Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award, the second prize of the Ministry of Education Science and Technology Progress Award, the first prize of the Huaxia Science and Technology Progress Award, the Chinese Medical Science and Technology Popularization Award, and the Achievement Promotion Award of the Shanghai Medical Science and Technology Award.
