On the cutting edge of medical science and technology, a remarkable showcase of surgical excellence and innovation concluded with resounding success. On June 27, the much-anticipated final of the 3rd "Da Vinci Cup" National Robotic Urologic Surgery Video Competition came to a close. Dr. Bi Hai, Associate Chief Physician from the Department of Urology at Shanghai General Hospital, emerged as the national champion, earning top honors with his outstanding surgical expertise and innovative spirit—bringing further distinction to the hospital.
A Prestigious Competition Uniting the Nation’s Best
The Da Vinci Cup is one of China’s most influential and authoritative events in the field of urologic surgery. Since its launch in May 2024, this third edition attracted over 100 elite urologists from 72 top-tier hospitals across 28 provinces. More than just a contest of skill, the competition serves as a platform to showcase the latest surgical concepts and innovative practices in robotic-assisted urology.
Following three rigorous rounds of selection, 18 finalists advanced to the national championship, representing the pinnacle of robotic urologic surgery in China. The judging panel was composed of leading experts in the field, chaired by Academician Zhang Xu, ensuring a fair, professional, and highly credible assessment process.
Surgical Excellence and Innovation at the Forefront
The award-winning procedure performed by Dr. Bi Hai was a robot-assisted laparoscopic radical cystectomy with complete intracorporeal orthotopic neobladder reconstruction—a highly complex operation that not only removes the bladder tumor but also reconstructs a new bladder within the patient’s body, allowing normal urination and preserving quality of life.
In a highly competitive field, Dr. Bi stood out with his precise surgical skills, forward-thinking strategies, and deep empathy for patients. His performance demonstrated not only technical mastery but also a profound understanding of complex disease presentations and patient-centered care.
Dr. Bi is a key member of the Bladder Cancer Team at Shanghai General Hospital, which has spent nearly two decades advancing bladder-sparing and minimally invasive techniques through multidisciplinary collaboration, technology integration, and individualized care strategies. For patients requiring bladder removal, Dr. Bi expertly performs robotic-assisted radical cystectomy with total intracorporeal neobladder reconstruction.
His success is no accident—Dr. Bi has long been dedicated to urology, accumulating rich clinical experience and pioneering new approaches in robotic surgery. He skillfully combines cutting-edge technology with classical surgical principles, creating innovative solutions for even the most complex cases. His procedures consistently deliver minimal trauma, faster recovery, and excellent outcomes.
A World-Class Platform, A Shared Achievement
Dr. Bi's championship title is not only a personal achievement but also a reflection of Shanghai General Hospital’s overall excellence in robotic urologic surgery. Since the introduction of the 4th-generation Da Vinci Xi surgical system in 2019, the hospital has performed over 1,000 robotic surgeries annually, empowering surgeons with advanced capabilities.
Under the leadership of Professor Xia Shujie, academic lead of the department, Deputy Director Han Bangmin, and the entire clinical team, the hospital's Department of Urology has made significant strides in robotic-assisted surgery. From challenging high-difficulty cases to technological breakthroughs, they continuously push boundaries and bring hope to patients. Dr. Bi’s national championship is a testament to their years of dedication and excellence.
