Shanghai General Hospital (Southern Branch) Marks a Milestone in Joint Surgery—Inauguration of the Next-Generation Robotic System

On March 26, Shanghai General Hospital (Southern Branch) reached a significant milestone as the first next-generation robotic system for joint surgery was officially launched in a grand ceremony at the hospital’s operating room auditorium. The event witnessed a groundbreaking integration of precision medical technology with artificial intelligence.

Technology-Driven Advancements Usher in a New Era of "Precision + Minimally Invasive" Joint Surgery

The ceremony commenced at 8 a.m. amidst enthusiastic applause. In his speech, Vice President Liu Jun stated, “The introduction of robotic surgery marks a new stage of intelligent and digital transformation in our hospital’s orthopedics. This innovation not only revolutionizes traditional surgical approaches but also represents a patient-centered effort to enhance medical quality. By incorporating this cutting-edge technology, our hospital aims to establish a regional joint replacement center, offering safer and less invasive treatment options for patients.”

Direct Anterior Approach Total Hip Arthroplasty (DAA-THA) has been a signature surgical technique at our hospital, with a core philosophy centered on "minimally invasive" procedures. By utilizing an intermuscular approach, this technique significantly reduces soft tissue damage and postoperative pain, leading to faster recovery compared to conventional surgeries. The robotic system further refines this technique by enabling preoperative personalized planning, real-time intraoperative navigation, and sub-millimeter precision control through its robotic arm. This ensures greater surgical accuracy and individualization, thereby improving overall stability in hip joint replacements.

Director Ma Jinzhong of the Southern Branch’s Joint Surgery Department emphasized that the combination of DAA-THA with robotic-assisted surgery marks a new paradigm of "precision + minimally invasive" treatment for hip replacement. This advancement elevates our hospital’s orthopedic capabilities to a new level, providing high-quality medical services to more patients.

Human-Machine Collaboration Showcases a New "Intelligent Surgery" Model

Following the inauguration, Director Ma Jinzhong and his joint surgery team performed two live demonstration surgeries, showcasing the full procedural workflow of robotic-assisted hip and knee replacements.

Under the guidance of orthopedic surgeons, the robotic arm seamlessly executed critical steps such as osteotomy and prosthesis positioning, supported by synchronized high-definition imaging. This attracted the attention of observing medical students and nurses. "The robot does not replace the surgeon; rather, through human-machine collaboration, it enhances the precision and minimally invasive nature of DAA-THA, achieving a stable, accurate, and gentle surgical outcome," Director Ma explained.

Voices from Medical Staff: Advancing Patient Care through Technological Innovation

“As we progressed from training sessions to witnessing the system launch, our nursing team deeply experienced how intelligent devices optimize perioperative care,” said Pan Yuqin, head nurse of the operating room. She noted that robotic-assisted surgery significantly reduces intraoperative exposure time, allowing for more targeted postoperative care.

Looking ahead, the Joint Surgery Department of Shanghai General Hospital (Southern Branch) plans to leverage this technology to collaborate with universities and research institutions on advanced orthopedic innovations. Additionally, the hospital aims to extend the benefits of cutting-edge medical technologies to a broader patient population through academic exchanges, public screenings, and other outreach activities.
