2023 Shanghai Science and Technology Awards Announced

On October 23, the 2023 Shanghai Science and Technology Conference and Science and Technology Awards Ceremony took place.

Haodong Lin from the Trauma Center at Shanghai General Hospital received the "Outstanding Youth Science and Technology Contribution Award." Meanwhile, the project led by Dianwen Song from the Orthopedics Center, titled "Development and Clinical Application of New Strategies for Comprehensive Treatment of Spinal Tumors," was awarded the Second Prize of the "Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award."

Outstanding Youth Science and Technology Contribution Award

Haodong Lin, Chief Physician, Professor
Dr. Lin has long been engaged in clinical and research work focused on nerve injury repair and functional reconstruction. Addressing the challenge of "limited regenerative capacity and difficulty in restoring function after nerve injury," he explores various nerve transfer methods to restore limb function post-injury and seeks ways to promote nerve regeneration to enhance treatment outcomes. These research achievements have been implemented in over 500 cases in hospitals domestically and internationally and included in numerous specialized publications. His methods have significantly improved limb functionality in patients with peripheral nerve injuries and enhanced bladder function in spinal cord injury patients, leading to improved quality of life and substantial social impact.

Second Prize of the Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award

Award-Winning Project Title:
"Development and Clinical Application of New Strategies for Comprehensive Treatment of Spinal Tumors"

Project Team Members: Dianwen Song, Tong Meng, Huabin Yin, Yiyun Cheng, Qiang Zhang, Zongqiang Huang, Peiyi Wu, Lingbin Che, Qinghua Zhao, Changping Wang

Project Overview:

This project focuses on identifying clinical characteristics of patients with primary spinal tumors, such as chordoma, and establishing a prognosis model tailored for Chinese patients. By innovating surgical resection techniques, it has improved patient outcomes. Utilizing 3D printing technology, the team developed bioactive hydrogels capable of protecting the central nervous system and promoting bone formation, addressing the issue of bone defects post-spinal tumor surgery. Additionally, the project revealed the mechanism by which the bone-resorptive microenvironment regulates spinal tumor onset and designed bone-targeted nanomaterials to enhance the targeting effect on osteolytic lesions. The project team has concentrated on the clinical diagnosis and treatment of spinal tumors, as well as the research and development of materials and devices, and mechanism exploration. The new comprehensive treatment strategy for spinal tumors developed by the team has been implemented in multiple hospitals across China, achieving remarkable social impact.
