Advisor of New Development Bank, Mr. Teixeira Visited Our Hospital
On the afternoon of March 11, 2024, Alessandro Golombiewski Teixeira, Special Advisor of the New Development Bank (NDB) and former Chief Economic Advisor to the President of Brazil, along with Dr. Ludhmila Abrahão Hajjar, a renowned medical expert from the University of São Paulo Hospital, visited Shanghai General Hospital. The visit aimed at an in-depth exchange on hospital infrastructure, disciplinary development, technological empowerment, and potential future cooperation between the two institutions.
The New Development Bank was established in 2015 by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Headquartered in the World Expo area of Shanghai, China, it is the first international development finance institution founded by the BRICS countries. The NDB focuses on mobilizing resources for infrastructure and sustainable development projects in BRICS countries and other emerging and developing economies, complementing existing global and regional financial institutions to promote global growth and development. This visit, organized by the Expo Management Bureau, aimed to facilitate in-depth exchanges on healthcare and related technologies between Brazil and China, as well as to explore the potential for collaboration in areas such as smart hospitals and AI tools and technologies for emergency systems, seeking opportunities for medical cooperation, resource sharing, and mutual benefit.
The meeting was attended by Hu Guoyong, Vice President of Shanghai General Hospital; Liu Fang, Director of the International Cooperation and Exchange Department; Zhu Li, Director of the Medical Affairs Department; Fu Chunyu, Director of the Information Department; Dr. Wang Ruilan, Director of the Department of Emergency and Critical Care Medicine; Dr. Yang Wenyi, Deputy Director of the Department of Cardiology; Dr. Xie Hui, Chief Physician of the Department of Emergency and Critical Care Medicine; and Dr. Chen Cheng, Attending Physician of the Department of Emergency and Critical Care Medicine. The session was moderated by Gu Ming from the International Cooperation and Exchange Department.
Vice President Hu Guoyong expressed that this rare opportunity for in-person exchange was greatly appreciated, and he thanked the Expo Management Bureau and the NDB for their support. He noted that during this period of global change and hospital transformation, it is essential not only to focus on medical disciplines, healthcare, and medical technology development but also to expand the vision to include healthcare management and the application of artificial intelligence in hospital construction.
Dr. Ludhmila stated that within the next two years, there are plans, led by the University of São Paulo, to establish a comprehensive hospital in cooperation with China and Brazil. As a physician specializing in clinical medicine, cardiology, emergency medicine, and intensive care, she hopes to learn from the key disciplines and digital management practices of Shanghai General Hospital during this exchange and to seek potential cooperation opportunities.
Mr. Teixeira emphasized that as an investment bank, the NDB is concerned not only with infrastructure development but also with human health, aiming to build bridges for international medical cooperation. He acknowledged the rich history, distinguished physicians, and strong capabilities of Shanghai General Hospital, expressing hope that this exchange could serve as a platform for deepening mutual understanding and exploring substantial medical cooperation projects between China and Brazil.
Liu Fang, Director of the International Cooperation and Exchange Department, provided an overview of Shanghai General Hospital, highlighting its strong disciplines, leading capabilities in scientific research and education, unique international cooperation vision, layout and resources, diverse international exchange projects, and talent training programs. She also shared achievements in cross-disciplinary innovation between AI and medical engineering, digital transformation, and the application of internet scenarios in recent years.
Dr. Wang Ruilan, Director of the Department of Emergency and Critical Care Medicine, introduced the department's history, development philosophy, subspecialties, and core competencies. She elaborated on the construction and achievements of various centers within the department and the scientific research and teaching strengths of the critical care medicine discipline, receiving unanimous recognition and praise from the visiting guests.
During the interactive exchange session, the two sides engaged in detailed discussions on key disciplines such as cardiology and emergency and critical care medicine, as well as the application of 5G technology. Dr. Yang Wenyi, Deputy Director of the Department of Cardiology, noted that Shanghai General Hospital is a pilot hospital for the project of Building Smart Hospitals in Shanghai. The hospital is at the forefront of AI technology applications in cardiovascular diseases, including intelligent image reading and online intelligent diagnosis, which are continuously being upgraded. The future development prospects are promising. Fu Chunyu, Director of the Information Office, introduced the operating model of the hospital's "5G Ambulance," the concept of "admission upon boarding," and the feedback mechanism for backend data and future construction goals. Both sides responded positively, with strong interest in potential cooperation.
After the meeting, Alessandro and Dr. Ludhmila toured the emergency and critical care wards of the hospital, concluding the visit successfully.
