August 9, 2024 – Six international exchange students from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, the University of Birmingham in the UK, the National University of Singapore, and Nanyang Technological University in Singapore have successfully completed the 6-week summer research internship program at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The internship was held in the Skin Immunology Research Group, and Professor Wang Honglin awarded the students completion certificates and took a commemorative photo with them.

During the 6-week research internship, the international students closely interacted with the PI team from the Precision Research Center for Refractory Diseases and the teaching staff from Professor Wang Honglin’s research group. Through theoretical instruction, literature review, and practical training, they further enhanced their knowledge in the latest advancements in skin immunology, routine molecular and cellular biology experimental techniques, and animal pharmacodynamics evaluation methods. Based on this foundation, the six international students were divided into groups to complete proposals, experimental operations, result analysis, and reports for three independent projects: gene regulation and cell phenotype evaluation, pharmacodynamic assessment of a psoriasis mouse model, and identification of drug target proteins.

Additionally, Professor Wang Honglin’s team arranged a variety of extracurricular activities for the international students, including a visit to an ecological park, Chinese calligraphy lessons, and a hike around West Lake in Hangzhou. These activities helped the students experience both traditional Chinese culture and modern life. During the internship, Yi Jing Lee celebrated her birthday, and the teaching team organized a surprise birthday party for her.

On July 29, 2024, Ma Wei, Deputy Director of the International Cooperation and Exchange Office and Director of the International Student Development Center, along with Shen Lili, Director of the Student Exchange Office, visited the Precision Research Center for Refractory Diseases at Shanghai General Hospital to inspect the project’s progress. Professor Wang Honglin provided a report on the project’s implementation and progress, and the international students presented their mid-term study reports. Director Ma Wei engaged closely with the international students, inquiring about how they learned about the internship program and their experiences in China. The students expressed that they received careful guidance and support from the teaching team and gained a deeper understanding of basic medical research and traditional Chinese culture. Director Ma Wei and Liu Wei, Secretary of the Student Party Branch and Deputy Dean of the Clinical Medical School at Shanghai General Hospital, highly praised the project’s implementation.

Aligning with the Shanghai Jiao Tong University summer research internship program's educational goals, Skin Immunology Research Group, led by Professor Wang Honglin, has successfully completed three sessions of the internship. Leveraging the research platform and talent pool at the Precision Research Center for Refractory Diseases at Shanghai General Hospital, the group has developed a well-balanced theoretical and practical teaching and assessment system. They have established a well-structured, sustainable teaching team and created a series of distinctive, culturally rich activities. The aim is to foster academic exchange and collaboration, promote multicultural integration, and cultivate an international perspective and inclusiveness within the team, thereby advancing the discipline and enhancing international influence. This project has received strong support from the International Cooperation and Exchange Office at Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the Education Office at Shanghai General Hospital.
