Salute the "Role Model of the Times"| Six Members of Our Medical Aid Team for Morocco Returned Safely

On the evening of November 1, six members of the 194^th batch of Chinese medical aid team in Morocco arrived in Shanghai after completing the honorable two-year medical aid mission. Members of the team includes Jianhai Zhang from Department of Anesthesiology, Bin Cai and Long Zhou from Women and Children’s Center, Ye Wang and Xu Ming from General Surgery Clinical Medical Center, and Kai Wu from Trauma Clinical Medical Center.

Jing Shen, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee, Xiao Gong, Director of Organization Division, Zhengjun Qiu, Director of General Surgery Center, Sufang Wu, Director of Women and Children’s Center, Jinbao Li, Director of Department of Anesthesiology, Haodong Lin, Director of Trauma Center, and other related staffs went to the airport to greet the team warmly.

On November 19, 2021, six experts from our hospital departed for Sedat, Morocco as members of China's 194^th batch of medical aid team to provide medical assistance for a period of two years. Among them, Jianhai Zhang, Deputy Director of Pain Department (North Branch), served as the leader of aid team.

During the two years in Morocco, all the team members served the local patients with fully devoted hearts, noble medical ethics and superb medical skills, fully demonstrating the mission of Chinese foreign aid medical team-- To be fearless to hardships, be willing to dedicate themselves to saving lives, and to love the world and the people without boundaries. Sedat team received 9,272 outpatients and 11,747 emergency patients, completed 2,568 surgical operations and 1,500 cases of surgical anesthesia, delivered 5,894 babies, completing all clinical work with high quality.

On October 20, Propaganda Department of Central Committee praised the outstanding deeds of representatives of Chinese medical aid team for Morocco to the whole society and awarded them the honorary title of "Role Model of the Times".

Two years of foreign aid mission did give me an opportunity to deeply understand the philosophy of the old saying-- Success doesn’t have to totally depend on me, but when the success finally comes, my dedication will must be a part of it. That is to say, the efforts and dedication each of us made are indispensable. Over the past 60 years, countless medical workers have been participating in the glorious cause of China's medical aid to foreign countries one after another, and I’m so proud to be one of them to devote my own effort.

The two-year experience in Morocco is really unforgettable. All the ordinary but precious days we have been through, all the pain and the gain, all the hard work and harvest, all the sleepless nights and all the toasts for life... I sincerely want to express my gratefulness to my family for their understanding and support, to all my leaders for their warm-hearted concern and care, to all the teammates for their continuous commitment, and to myself for my perseverance. Let’s pay tribute to these unforgettable years!

Two years in Morocco enabled me to review and to practise the admirable Bethune spirit with my own hands-- to dedicate, to save lives, to practise internationalism. It is the mission of us who serve as CPC members that to be strict to ourselves, to always be ready to strengthen the willpower through the hardship we are faced with.

During the two years of medical work in aid of Morocco, I have always took the principle of "To Cure Sometimes, To Relieve Often, To Comfort Always" as my working guide and have been trying my best to treat and cure every patient through every surgical operation, serving as not only angels in white who helps the wounded to relieve the pain but ambassadors who promote the friendship between China and Morocco so as to carry forward Chinese spirit of medical aid to every corner of the world.

Xu Ming, General Surgery Center

As a member of the 194^th batch of China’s medical aid team to Morocco, I’m proud to say that we have successfully fulfilled the two-year mission after more than 700 days and nights’ endeavour. I was deeply moved and inspired by the great resilience and tenacious attitude of the Moroccan people, and the exchanges with the local doctors have convinced me that our contribution will leave a far-reaching impact on the local society as well. Medical aid is not only for curing diseases, but also for passing on friendship and hope. I believe that more people will join us in the future, and the world is bound to be a better place.

Kai Wu, Trauma Center

During the period of 712 days counted from November 19, 2021 when I left Shanghai to November 1, 2023 when I finally came back, I had been through a lot. The confusion and discomfort when everything is unfamiliar, the hardship in performing surgeries in difficult conditions, and of course, the happiness of reunion with my wife and daughter in a foreign country... I am glad that I fearlessly broke through my physical and psychological limits, overcame one difficulty and obstacle after another, and successfully completed this medical aid mission. I am very proud to be a member of the China’s Medical Aid Team, and deserve to be called a "role model of the times".

Our hospital has a glorious tradition of offering medical aid to foreign countries. Tracing back to the 1960s when China first set up the cause of foreign medical aid, Shanghai General Hospital took the lead in responding to the call of the state and sent 22 batches of medical aid teams to multiple countries in Asia and Africa to provide medical assistance with humanitarianism.

Since the 1980s, our hospital has sent fifteen batches of medical teams to Morocco to carry out medical aid missions, contributing to the development of local medical and health care as well as connecting the bridge of friendship between Shanghai and Morocco.

Angels in white joined hands together to save lives and relieve the pain, passing on the China-Africa friendship with their actions of love. With tightly connected hearts, we can still be close neighbour regardless of the faraway distance.
