Recently, according to the purpose of the "Notice on the Fifth Shanghai Famous Chinese Medicine Doctor Selection Work" of Shanghai Municipal Health and Health Commission, Shanghai Human Resources and Social Security Bureau and Shanghai Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Dr. Cunjun Zhang, Chief Physician of the Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine of Shanghai General Hospital, was awarded as “The Fifth Shanghai Famous Chinese Medicine Doctor”.

Dr. Cunjun Zhang, was born in December 1942, is a member of the Chinese Communist Party, the chief physician of the Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine of Shanghai General Hospital, and the 12th generation heir of the “Zhang's Internal Medicine“ sect of Chinese medicine.

Dr. Cunjun Zhang came from a family of Chinese medicine practitioners and studied under the guidance of his father, Dr. Longsun Zhang, who was selected to the first national succession class of famous old Chinese medicine experts from 1991 to 1994 under the supervision of Professor  Jingren Zhang, the "Master of Traditional Chinese Medicine". As the 12th generation and representative inheritor of the "Zhang's Internal Medicine", Dr. Cunjun Zhang has been engaged in TCM for more than 50 years, and has been devoted himself to the inheritance of Zhang's medicine and the popularization of science for a long time.

In 2020, he was awarded the representative inheritor of the "Zhang's Internal Medicine Therapy", a representative item of Shanghai's intangible cultural heritage. meanwhile, he won the certificate of "50 years of traditional Chinese medicine in Shanghai" and the first "Shanghai outstanding contribution award of traditional Chinese medicine" this year. In 2022, he was awarded the fifth "Shanghai Famous Chinese Medicine Doctor".

Zhang Cunjun inherited the academic essence of Zhang's internal medicine, advocated that exothermic heat diseases should be dispelled first, and spleen and stomach diseases should be treated evenly. He paid attention to the application of spleen and stomach theory in miscellaneous diseases, as well. He has established the basic treatment principles and characteristic prescriptions for common gastrointestinal diseases on the basis of family experience. In particular, he has proposed that selenium supplementation can prevent atrophic gastritis and precancerous lesions, as well as "atrophic gastritis should be treated from stasis". The treatment methods of regulating qi and activating blood circulation, clearing away heat and lowering the adverse flow of qi, clearing away heat and consolidating intestines were adopted to treat gastroesophageal and intestinal diseases, and satisfactory results were obtained, which relieved the pain of many patients.

He has been engaged in teaching for a long time, and has taught students at all levels of the former Shanghai Medical University, Jiaotong University School of Medicine and Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
