Director Zhang Yan And Her Team from Ophthalmology Department Conducted A SMILE Laser Surgery Training for Mongolian Trainees

On December 18th, a team of refractive surgery doctors and nurses from Mongolia led by Nergui, vice president of Bolor Melmii Eye Hospital, visited our hospital for a 3-day training on minimally invasive SMILE surgery. The training, consisting of doctors, nurses as well as technicians, was conducted in English during the whole process by the team led by Zhang Yan, Director of Ophthalmology Department II of the Vision Recovery Center.


On the opening ceremony, Prof. Sun Xiaodong, who also serves as the Vice President of our hospital, expressed warm welcome to the Mongolian team. According to Sun, our hospital attaches great importance to international academic exchanges, and our vision recovery center are planning to carry out more medical and scientific research cooperation with foreign institutes in areas such as sub-specialties. As a result, this training will definitely help to promote exchanges and cooperation between us and Mongolia in the field of medical treatment in the future. Moreover, Sun also delivered a brief speech on the conception of broadening international exchange and cooperation from the perspective of our hospital.


Zhang Yan, Director of Ophthalmology Department, presided over the opening ceremony. Zhang said that Bolor Melmii Eye Hospital of Mongolia is the largest eye hospital in Mongolia and is about to perform the first minimally invasive SMILE surgery in Mongolia. The trust of the Mongolian side to select Shanghai General Hospita as the first learning institute is highly appreciated. This training aims to improve the theoretical foundation of refractive surgery and surgical operation standardization of Mongolia medical team, and we will endeavour to provide full technical support to escort the smooth implementation of the SMILE surgery in Mongolia. Ms. Liu Fang, Director of International Cooperation and Exchange Department, introduced the history and current situation of our hospital to the Mongolian trainees. Zhang Zhihua, Deputy Director of Ophthalmology Department, introduced the Mongolian trainees to the overview of our vision recovery center.



During the 3-day training, Mongolian trainees visited our eye centers in our North and South Branches respectively. Director Zhang Yan, together with her team, incluing Associate Chief Physician Zhang Zhihua, Attending Physician Lu Yi, Dr. Wang Ruiqing, Technician Ma Lu, Nurse Huang Yingting, and Nurse Xia Yin Yin taught the trainees the perioperative management from three perspectives of doctor, technician and nursing, including the theoretical knowledge of preoperative examination, indications and contraindications, and operation techniques. Meanwhile, the teaching team also guided the Mongolian trainees to master the operation skills and the surgery precautions by means of on-site demonstration of the surgery, and conducted training sessions such as case discussion and analysis and so on.


We are glad to see that this training was highly evaluated and recognized by the Mongolian team, and Vice President Nergui expressed her gratitude for the dedication of the whole teaching team as well as Shanghai General Hospital, and also hoped that this training would be a starting point to further promote the exchanges and cooperation between the two sides in the field of medical treatment. It is also found in the feedback form that the Mongolian trainees were particularly enthusiastic about the on-site surgical observation and case discussion sessions. From the perspective of our medical and nursing team, it is also a valuable chance to further improve their professionalism during the training, thus practising the mission of “learning while teaching, teaching through learning” and promoting the development of the discipline.
