      Shanghai General Hospital was founded in 1864 by French Consuls as one of the largest and the earliest western medicine hospitals in China. It was renamed as Gong Ji Hospital in 1877 and Shanghai Municipal First People's Hospital in 1953. In 2002, Shanghai General Hospital was entitled as the First People's Hospital Affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University. In 1992, it was firstly evaluated as Class A tertiary general hospitals by the Ministry of Health of the People's Republic of China. For 25 consecutive years, Shanghai General Hospital has been awarded as the civilized model unit by Shanghai municipal government.
      In the past 153 years, Shanghai General Hospital is always in the leading position in national and local medical circle. With two campuses-north Hongkou Campus (No. 100 Haining Road, Hongkou District in Shanghai) and south Songjiang campus (No. 650 New Songjiang Road, Songjiang District in Shanghai), our hospital occupies a land area of 303,333 square meters, and is the hospital with the largest area in Shanghai at present. There are 4003 permanent staffs, including 1297 physician doctors and 1640 nurses. The number of the actual using beds in hospital are around 2580. In 2017, there were 3.77 million outpatients, more than 110,000 inpatients, and around 80,000 surgical patients.
      As a Class A tertiary general hospital, we are entrusted by Shanghai municipal government to manage other four local hospitals. They are Shanghai No.4 People's hospital, Baoshan Central hospital, Songjiang Central hospital and Shanghai Eye Disease Prevention and Treatment Center. We also have close collaborative relationship with other public hospitals in the surrounding provinces.
      We are committed to building our hospital into a first-class modern hospital in Shanghai and even in the world featured with low cost, high efficiency and superb clinical and management quality. There are 48 departments and 53 wards in Shanghai General Hospital, 8 out of which are national key clinic disciplines. They are cardiology department, ENT Department, Ophthalmology, Urology Department, Respiratory Department, Gastroenterology Department, General surgery Department, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Oncology Department and Clinic Pharmacology. Four of them are identified as Shanghai Key Disciplines, including visual rehabilitation clinic medical center, Shanghai organ transplantation Clinical Center, Shanghai Cardiac emergency center and Shanghai emergency trauma center. National Ministry of Health approved Shanghai General Hospital as the Endoscopic training base because of the big number and high quality of our endoscopic cases.
      Other renowned departments includes orthopedics, thoracic surgery, hematology, anesthesiology, neurosurgical, endocrinology and metabolism, nephrology, emergency critical care, plastic surgery, neurology, geriatric, dermatology, stomatology, traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture, massage. rehabilitation medicine, medical psychology, infectious disease, ultrasonic medicine, radiology, laboratory, nuclear medicine, bold transfusion, echocardiography, day care medical, pathology, physical examination, nutrition, international medical care center, laboratory, training center, experiment center. They work collaboratively to build our hospital to be a strong and comprehensive modern public medical unit to meet our people's growing medical demand and requirements.
      We are also committed to constructing a research driving academic hospital by enrolling more competitive researchers. At the same time, we invested in improving the overall research abilities by collaborating with world famous medical schools and hospitals. We currently have two Shanghai Key laboratories on ocular fundus disease and pancreatic disease, and are focusing building our intestinal micro ecology laboratory. In recent 5 years, we are awarded 225 national natural science funding projects, and 491 provincial funding projects. Around 1100 SCI paper are published in world level journals, including Nature Medicine, Nature Biotechnology, Lancet, New England Journal of Medicine, Gut, Gastroenterology and Cancer Research, etc.
