On October 13th, Professor Yisu Zhao, a member of National Academy of Engineering, visited Shanghai General Hospital to carry out academic exchanges on orthopedic biomechanics and related disciplines with a group of experts, including Professor Jiwu Chen, director of Sports Medicine Department of Shanghai General Hospital, Professor Chenggong Zheng from Shanghai Jiaotong University, Professor Jia Han from Shanghai University of Medicine & Health Sciences, Professor Weijie Fu from Shanghai University of Sport, and Professor Junjun Zhu from Shanghai University. These experts shared their opinion on the application and promotion of biomechanics from the perspectives of sports rehabilitation, sports medicine, and medical-industrial integration respectively. Jing Qin, Secretary of Party Committee, and Fang Liu, Director of International Cooperation and Exchange Department, attended this exchange meeting as well. And on behalf of our institute, Secretary Qin also conferred an honorary professorship certificate on Prof. Zhao for his outstanding contributions in orthopedic biomechanics.

In the opening speech, Qin firsst gave a warm welcom to Prof. Zhao and all the professors, then he highly appreciated the profound attainments Porf. Zhao has achieved in biomechanics as well as his effort in combining biomechanics with sports rehabilitation, sports medicine, and medical-industrial integration which does great help to promote the development of both theory and practice in this field and offers a lot of new possibilities for the innovation of medical technologies. With the emerging innovative technologies as well as the medical-industrial transformation and collaboration, more and more effective means and tools are provided for patients to restore their physical functions and improve quality of life. It is doubtlessly a common wish that all the experts and Shanghai General Hospital take this forum as an precious opportunity to further deepen the cooperation, thus making greater contributions to improve patients’ well-being not only in physical but also in mental.

In Prof. Zhao’s speech on “Biomechanics” and “Design, manufacture and clinical use of external spinal supports”, he introduced the concept that biomechanics is the foundation of sports medicine which sticks to the rule of function first. Besides, relying on the development of materialogy and engineering science and supplemented by the biomechanics, it is possible to solve clinical problems of sports medicine with new ideas and optimize the medical treatment plan continuously. Prof. Chenggong Zheng’s topic focused on “Biomechanical Problems of Orthopedic Implants”. While approving that the emerging innovative technologies have greatly accelerated the development of orthopedic sports medicine, the application of new products must be able to withstand the biomechanical test. Next, Prof. Jia Han’s speech on “Exercise Rehabilitation for Neurological Movement Control Disorders in Chronic Ankle Instability” emphasized that rehabilitation is an important part of sports medicine, especially in preventing and treating chronic diseases, and the combination of sports rehabilitation and multiple disciplines helps the ankel function  recover to the maximum. Prof. Weijie Fu’s lecture on “Appying Neurobiomechanics in Foot Ability Enhancement” mentioned that the continuous devlopment of theoretical and practical researches nourishes the blooming growth of sports medicine. After the lecture, all the experts present also had a heated discussion on the hot issues of orthopaedic biomechanics.

Professor Zhao is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, a tenured professor at Mayo Medical Center and Johns Hopkins University, and he is also the honorary professor at multiple universiteis, including Chinese University of Hong Kong, West China Medical Center of Sichuan University, Tianjin Medical University, and the Medicine School of University of California, Irvine. Prof. Zhao has extensive experience and has made fruitful achievements in biomechanics research and applications. He has profound knowledge in the areas including dynamic analysis system of VIMS(muscle, bone and joint), biology and biomechanics in bone reconstruction and fracture treatment, design and testing of joint implants and internal and external fixators of bone, etc. He has published more than 347 papers in scholarly journals, has been invited for writing more than 184 chapters in books and journals, 5 reference books, and supervised more than 180 postdoctors.
