Professor Tam Nguyen, Deputy Director of the Research Center of St Vincent's Hospital in Melbourne, Australia Came to Visit Shanghai General Hospital

On the morning of September 19th, accompanied by Liu Bing, Deputy Consul General of the Australian Consulate General in Shanghai, Professor Tam Nguyen, Deputy Director of the Research Center of St Vincent's Hospital in Melbourne, Australia, visited our hospital and had in-depth exchanges on the scientific research system, key research areas and future cooperations of the two institutes. Prof. Sun Xiaodong, vice president of Shanghai General Hospital, and heads of relevant departments and researchers attended the seminar. Prof. Sun extended his warm welcome to the arrival of Professor Tam Nguyen and Liu Bing’s team.

Prof.Sun Xiaodong once visited St. Vincent's Hospital in the training program for presidents of hospitals organized by Shanghai Hospital Development Center in 2019, and he was deeply impressed by the strong ability of scientific research of St. Vincent's Hospital, especially the mechanism of combining clinical departments with scientific research ones tightly. Since there exists a lot of potential for future cooperation between St. Vincent's Hospital and Shanghai General Hospital, the seminar offers a great opportunity for both sides to get familiar with each other. And it is a shared prospect that an official exchange and communication mechanism can be established, substansive mutual benificial programs can be initiated, thus promoting more exchanges on various areas such as disciplines, scientific research, intelligent medical treatment and management experiencce of hospital and so on.

Liu Bing first thanked Shanghai General Hospital for all the preparations well made for this seminar, and then expressed her expectations that there will be more chances for future cooperation between Shanghai General Hospital and the whole Australian healthcare system. Liu noted that, China, especially Shanghai, acting like a pioneer of medical innovation and achievement transformation, has the most abundant and excellent medical resources, and is Australia's most important partner in fields of medical and research cooperation. As a result, Australian Consulate General sincerely hope that they could help to build a bridge between two sides for more exchanges and cooperation.  

Professor Nguyen then introduced the overall situation of St. Vincent's Hospital, which has a long history, and is the largest Catholic non-profit healthcare institution in Australia. With an annual treatment capacity of more than 320,000 patients and surgeries amount of more than 18,000, St. Vincent's Hospital has many backbone disciplines such as oncology, gastroenterology, neuroscience, etc. Professor Nguyen hoped that in the coming future the two institutes can realize regular exchanges of experts and talentes, long-term cooperation in scientific research, initiating more win-win programs for mutual benefit.

Ms Liu Fang, Director of International Cooperation and Exchange Department, gave an detailed introduction on the overall situation of the hospital, especially the mission, explorations and practice of the hospital in recent years in mutiple fields such as healthcare model innovation as well as the establishment of clinical research system, including tbe clinical research institute, research center for targeted treatment for difficult diseases, biobanks, database of specialized diseases, integrated-innovation of applying artificial intelligence technologies in medicince and engineering, digital transformation, and application of Internet scenarios.

Gong Xiaowei and Zhu Qingyu from the Australian Consulate General in Shanghai, Zhang Jiayin, Director of Radiology Department, Ding Xueying and Yan Biao, Deputy Director of Secintific Research Department, Kang Mei from Clinical Research Center, Mengtong and Jia Huixun from Orthopaedic Clinical Medicine Center attended the seminar.
