"First-Aid Relay" Performed by Department of Ultrasonic Medicine

In the afternoon of Friday, Aug. 8, 2014, it was the time of "weekly rare case discussion" for the Department of Ultrasonic Medicine to respond to the call of the hospital and improve the professional skill. However, in face of the patients who need to be examined, based on the principle of "patients first", the medical staff of the Department of Ultrasonic Medicine were busy with their work at each consulting room. As usuals, the enthusiastic "Xinlin volunteers" were maintaining the order and pacifying the patients.

With all staff's efforts, at about 2 p.m., there were just several patients in the corridor waiting to be diagnosed. At this moment, Aunty Niu Dianrong found a young female patient who didn't look well. She came to ask if she needed any help. The patient said she was not well just because she had no lunch. So Aunty Niu was busy with helping other patients. However, Aunty Niu who has rich experience still worried about her. After a while, she came to ask whether the girl needed some water or food. The patient began to sweat after a few words and looked even worse. Aunty Niu immediately sought help from the doctor of the nearest No.4 consulting room. At that moment, Doctor Gao Kang was examining a patient. Hearing what Aunty Niu said, he helped the patient come to the consulting room to lie low with Aunty Niu. Then, the patient had generalized convulsion and polypnea. This is an emergency. According to the emergency treatment plan, Doctor Gao ran to No. 5 consulting room to take the first-aid case while calling Director Shi Qiusheng to rapidly give assistance on the spot.

Director Shi Qiusheng immediately came to see the physical sign of the patient who was found skin damp, pulse weak and both hands convulsive. The patient was conscious but restless. She got a whole body numbness, muscle contraction and difficult respiration as she said. He pacified the patient to keep calm and relaxed while holding her pulse. When he was told the patient took no food for long, he asked the colleagues of the Department of Ultrasonic Medicine to give her hypertonic glucose orally. Immediately contact the Rescue Room! Report the time and location! At the same time, Doctor Xu Changsong beside quickly helped the patient uptake oxygen. Doctor Liu has taken her blood pressure: 90/70mmHg. Intern Yao Mengyan fast opened the 50% glucose injection taken from the first-aid case by Doctor Gao Kang and handed it over to Director Shi who poured the glucose injection to the mouth of the patient while massaging the hand of patient and pacifying her.

They didn't feel relieved until Doctor Zhao and Nurse Chen Weiwei from the Rescue Room came to the Department of Ultrasonic Medicine and said there was nothing major upon careful examination of the patient. The patient was asked to be observed for tow hours after taking a rest. Then, Aunty Niu who first found the abnormal condition quietly took her own cup and beverage and gave them to the girl.

The accident occurred because this patient intended to complete the B-ultrasonography which should have done in the next morning. In emergency situation, the enthusiastic, seasoned volunteer and the rapidly responded, well-cooperated Department of Ultrasonic Medicine jointly performed an unusual "first-aid relay".
